13-year-old still unconscious
Six days after being struck down by canter and dragged for several yards on the Better Hope Public Road, East Coast Demerara, a 13-year-old school girl remains unconscious and in a critical condition at the High Dependency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital(GPH).

Lanchwantie Jagnarine, also called “Girlie”, a student of Amen’s Private School, Better Hope, suffered injuries to her head and neck, a broken left leg and right hand. She was operated on immediately on being admitted to the hospital but to date has not regained consciousnesss.

Relatives said that Jagnarine, who had just left school, was crossing the Better Hope road around 12:30 hours on Friday, and was on the pedestrian crossing when she was hit by the speeding vehicle whose driver failed to stop.

Witnesses said that the child was trapped under the vehicle and dragged for some distance. They said the driver did not stop until he was alerted by villagers.

The driver was taken into custody and his vehicle is at the Plaisance Police Station

A distraught aunt, lamenting the blatant disregard for the pedestrian crossing among some drivers, recalled that another 13 year old , Trishauna Debidyal, was struck down and killed by a speeding vehicle at the same spot last year.
