Six
days after being struck down by canter and dragged for
several yards on the Better Hope Public Road, East Coast
Demerara, a 13-year-old school girl remains unconscious and
in a critical condition at the High Dependency Unit of the
Georgetown Public Hospital(GPH).

Jagnarine, also called “Girlie”, a student of Amen’s
Private School, Better Hope, suffered injuries to her head
and neck, a broken left leg and right hand. She was operated
on immediately on being admitted to the hospital but to date
has not regained consciousnesss.
Relatives
said that Jagnarine, who had just left school, was crossing
the Better Hope road around 12:30 hours on Friday, and was
on the pedestrian crossing when she was hit by the speeding
vehicle whose driver failed to stop.
Witnesses
said that the child was trapped under the vehicle and
dragged for some distance. They said the driver did not stop
until he was alerted by villagers.
The
driver was taken into custody and his vehicle is at the
Plaisance Police Station
A
distraught aunt, lamenting the blatant disregard for the
pedestrian crossing among some drivers, recalled that
another 13 year old , Trishauna
Debidyal, was struck down and killed by a
speeding vehicle at the same spot last year.
