Schoolboy killed near pedestrian crossing

-minibus driver in custody

A 12-year-old schoolboy was killed yesterday afternoon after being struck by a route 32 minibus. He was at the time using a pedestrian crossing on the West Coast Demerara public road.

Ameer Khan, of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, was struck down in front of the St. John's Community High School, which he had attended.

According to police, Khan exited the school compound, at around 15:10 hrs, and was heading to the opposite side of the road when minibus BKK 1248, which was heading west, struck him.

Some reports state that the boy was using the pedestrian crossing while other reports state that he was walking close to the pedestrian crossing. Eyewitnesses said that the driver immediately asked the passengers to disembark, and he took the injured boy, along with the principal of the school, to the West Demerara Regional Hospital.

Khan was examined by a doctor, who pronounced him dead.

The 27-year-old driver was detained at the Leonora Police Station and his bus was impounded.

A source said that several schoolchildren who witnessed the accident stood in shock at the scene long after their friend's body had been removed.

The boy's mother, Bibi Khan, told Kaieteur News that she received the tragic news from some of her son's schoolmates, who came to the family's home.

Ameer Khan was the youngest of five children.

A teacher from St. John's Community High alleged that minibus drivers traversing the West Bank Demerara public road often fail to slow down while approaching the school.

Police say that the driver who allegedly struck down the lad had recently received a stern warning for a traffic violation.

In the wake of the tragedy, a senior traffic official on the West Coast of Demerara appealed to passengers to caution minibus drivers when they are breaching the traffic laws.

At least 25 children have been killed so far on the roadways within the past eight months.
